About Me

I make photographic images...
Hello
...and many other things, like garden beds, books, rock walls, structures, cabinets, poems, and adventures. I do some teaching and spend quite a bit of time naturalizing, birding, and botanizing. Restoring and maintaining the old house my wife Lisa and I bought in 2000 is an ongoing project. But photography is what I am most consistently passionate about. It is an avocation, not a profession. If I had to depend on photography to make living I wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much. With no financial motives, I can immerse myself in the process of seeing and making images. On the frequent trips Lisa and I take around the western U.S., my camera is nearly always within reach.

A few well-known photographers have expressed some of the principles that orient my approach to photography:
“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
– Elliott Erwitt
“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.”
– Dorothea Lange
“I do not photograph for ulterior purposes. I photograph for the thing itself - for the photograph - without consideration of how it may be used.”
– Eliot Porter
